TD’s and Senators encouraged to sign pledge for heart and stroke patients
Political support needed for practical, social and emotional support services of CVD patients
Read MoreThe stroke service at Beaumont Hospital in Dublin has become the first in Ireland and the UK to be awarded the prestigious status of official ‘Certified ESO Stroke Centre,’ by the European Stroke Organisation (ESO).
Founded in 2007, the European Stroke Organisation (ESO) of which the Irish Heart Foundation is a member, is a pan-European society of stroke researchers and physicians, national and regional stroke societies and lay organisations that aims to reduce the burden of stroke by changing the way that stroke is viewed and treated.
According to the ESO, “Meeting ESO standards is an accomplishment, which certifies that the organisation meets the European standard of excellent stroke care.”
The application process to gain ESO accreditation takes a number of years and Beaumont’s success is testament to the hard work and dedication put into the process by all the staff in the hospital’s stroke service.
“ It's a great credit to everyone working in the stroke service here in Beaumont,"
The Stroke Centre at Beaumont Hospital also houses the National Thrombectomy Service and is one of two hospitals in the country where this life-saving stroke treatment is carried out. The other being Cork University Hospital.
Commenting Professor David Williams, Professor of Stroke medicine at the RCSI University of Medicine and Health Sciences, and Beaumont Hospital in Dublin, paid huge credit to all the team at the stroke service in Beaumont for gaining international ESO accreditation.
“I think it’s a great credit to everyone working in the stroke service here in Beaumont and that includes, the stroke physicians, the stroke nurses, the rehabilitation team and importantly, cardiology and neuro radiology,” Prof Williams said.
It’s a great achievement for the country and its also great for our patients, he added.
Tallaght Hospital in Dublin has recently been added as an ESO accredited Stroke Unit and the Mater Hospital in Dublin is also an ESO accredited Stroke Unit.
