Getting Started in Your School

All schools are different, so we have gathered ideas from our CPR schools on tried and tested ways to deliver the CPR 4 Schools Programme.

All schools are different, so we have gathered ideas from our CPR schools on tried and tested ways to deliver the CPR 4 Schools Programme.

Once you have completed the CPR 4 Schools teacher training we recommend starting training in your school as soon as possible. All you need is a 60 minute class to deliver the CPR 4 Schools training.

Take some time to prepare

Teaching CPR 4 Schools

Remember, the Irish Heart Foundation are here to help. If you would like to run any ideas by us or get some advice just email schools@irishheart.ie.

Once you have delivered a CPR class you can think about expansion lessons and CPR awareness. You might even like to start building plans to train the whole school. You’ll find lots of great ideas on our Teacher Portal.

We know that all schools are different. We have tried to make the CPR 4 Schools programme as flexible as possible. Here are some ideas from other schools to get started:

Schedule Class Time – CPR 4 Schools fits into SPHE, PE, Science and Wellbeing hours. Our schools have taught across all subjects. School management’s support in scheduling time has been vital to the successful delivery of the programme.

Have a Whole School Event – Train your whole school across a day or a week. Our schools have incorporated training into Wellbeing Week, Sports and Celebration days, Valentine’s day or community events such as Restart a Heart Day (16th October). Many have borrowed kits to train the whole school community quickly. Find what works for you.

Peer to Peer Training – Train students up as CPR leaders and training assistants to help you to run the CPR 4 Schools programme. We have seen students from 2nd to 6th years deliver the training in their school. They gain skills and confidence through teaching. Training assistants can help you set up classrooms, check in on practise and tidy up.

CPR Awareness Campaigns – Students can create resources and use different skills to run CPR awareness campaigns. Through the course students will learn how vital it is to share their knowledge of CPR, to know and display your Eircode, and to maintain your AED and ensure it is accessible. Many of our CPR schools have run CPR, Eircode and AED awareness campaigns in their school and community.

Recommend the training to your colleagues – We run training throughout the school year. Get some support within your school and invite your colleagues to complete the CPR 4 Schools teacher training.
