Almost 75 buildings all over Ireland will be lighting up in red today (29th of September) for World Heart Day.

The Irish Heart Foundation has appealed to iconic landmarks and buildings nationwide to show their support for the many people whose lives have been affected by heart disease or stroke this World Heart Day. 74 buildings across 21 counties will be participating in the light up, marking the end of the Irish Heart Foundation’s Heart Month campaign.

Among the many buildings across Ireland lighting up for the day are historical sites such as Kilkenny Castle and the Dunbrody Famine Ship, university campuses including Trinity College Dublin and University College Cork, and cultural hubs like the National Concert Hall and Carlow Visual Theatre. A number of county councils also got involved in the campaign, with town halls and civic offices from Cavan to Waterford set to be lit up in red this evening. Throughout the month of September, the Irish Heart Foundation ran its successful Her Heart Matters campaign, which focused on promoting the heart health of women as they move through menopause. Over 2,700 people registered for the Her Heart Matters webinar that took place earlier today (if you missed it, you can catch up on the recording here), which explored the effects of menopause on heart health.

The Her Heart Matters campaign highlighted the fact that one in four women die from heart disease or stroke, making women six times more likely to die from cardiovascular disease than breast cancer. Although these statistics are stark, the Irish Heart Foundation has developed valuable resources to support women in making small manageable changes to their lifestyle to prevent heart disease and stroke, including a self-care and wellbeing journal and a shareable infographic.
