Support women this Valentine’s Day with a donation to the Irish Heart Foundation

The Irish Heart Foundation is urging the public to keep women’s hearts beating with a donation this Valentine’s Day. Go Red for Women is the Irish Heart Foundation’s national fundraising campaign, in support of women across Ireland – one quarter of whom will die from cardiovascular disease.

Cardiovascular disease is one of the leading causes of death in Ireland, taking the lives of more than 4,000 women in Ireland last year. Women are almost six times more likely to die from cardiovascular disease than breast cancer. However, the good news is that 80 per cent of premature death from cardiovascular disease is preventable.

All the donations from Go Red for Women will help raise awareness of women’s heart health and support the Irish Heart Foundation’s life-saving programmes that keep women’s hearts beating all over Ireland. These include, CPR training, heart health checks, patient support groups and information events.

“This Valentine’s Day, we are asking people to Go Red and make a donation to the Irish Heart Foundation in support of the women they love,"

Judith Gilsenan, Commercial Director , The Irish Heart Foundation

Shirley Ingram who suffered a heart attack at the age of 50, spoke of the importance of the ‘Go Red for Women’ campaign, and said, “One minute you are running on a treadmill and two hours later you are lying on your back being told you have had a heart attack. I think it’s important for women, that we look after ourselves. We are great at looking after everybody else. The ‘Go Red for Women’ campaign allows women to say, “I need to take some time out to address my own health issues”.”

Judith Gilsenan, Commercial Director with the Irish Heart Foundation said, “This Valentine’s Day, we are asking people to Go Red and make a donation to the Irish Heart Foundation in support of the women they love. Every day we fight to keep women’s hearts beating by raising awareness of heart health and delivering life-saving programmes in communities across Ireland. Any donation, big or small, will help us support women in your local community – please visit www.GoRed.ie today and make a donation.”

The Irish Heart Foundation’s national fundraising day takes place on Valentine’s Day when volunteers will be packing bags in supermarkets and will also be taking to the streets fundraising across Ireland.
