The 2019 Irish Cardiac Society Scientific Meeting and AGM

Members of the Irish Cardiac Society will convene in Galway next week for the Society’s 70th Annual Scientific Meeting and AGM.

The 2019 Irish Cardiac Society Scientific Meeting and AGM is due to take place next week in Galway.

The meeting, which runs from Thursday October 17th to Saturday October 19th in the Galway Bay Hotel, is Ireland’s largest annual cardiology meeting and brings together all those working in cardiology across the country.

This year marks the 70th anniversary of the Irish Cardiac Society and speakers at the three-day event will include, Dr Mary Norine Walsh, Past President of the American College of Cardiology; Professor Simon Ray, President of the British Cardiovascular Society, and Professor Stephan Achenbach, incoming President of the European Society of Cardiology.

Dr Salim Yusuf, Professor of Medicine at McMaster University in Canada, Past President of the World Heart Federation and internationally renowned cardiologist will deliver the 2019 Stokes lecture or keynote address.

Professor Jim Crowley, President of the Irish Cardiac Society said, “It is a great privilege to welcome both speakers and attendees to this year’s annual meeting”.

“I have hugely enjoyed representing the Society over the past twelve months both at home and abroad, but I am particularly delighted to host this year’s meeting in my hometown, a significant event marking 70 years of the Irish Cardiac Society.”

Thanking all those who have contributed to the meeting Prof Crowley said, “We were delighted to have received a high number of submissions, indicating the quality of scientific content which the society now attracts, and it is a particular pleasure to welcome our international speakers”.

Prof Crowley added that the meeting was not just an educational conference, but it also served as an opportunity for delegates to come together.

“Our Society is one which has extended the hand of friendship nationally and internationally for seventy years, and we continue to enjoy meeting friends and colleagues and strengthening these connections. In keeping with that spirit, I hope delegates will take time to enjoy Galway’s rich history and culture,” he said.

The Irish Cardiac Society is the professional society in Ireland for those whose primary interest is in the practice of Cardiology, Cardiovascular Surgery and Cardiovascular Research. Membership is open to consultant cardiologists and cardiology trainees throughout Ireland and it currently has approximately 300 members. The society is a member so the European Society of Cardiology and an affiliate member of the American College of Cardiology.

The 2019 Irish Cardiac Society Scientific Meeting and AGM incorporates the annual meetings of the Irish Cardiac Society, the Irish Nurses Cardiovascular Association, the Association of Cardiac Physiologists and the Irish Association of Cardiac Rehabilitation.
