The new CPR Heroes Award that recognises individual students and teachers who go the extra mile in promoting CPR.

The Irish Heart Foundation is delighted to recognise the incredible efforts of schools around the county who participated  in the the CPR 4 Schools programme in 2021/2022.

This year a total of 56 awards have been presented across 39 schools all over the country.

The Irish Heart Foundation’s CPR 4 Schools programme recognises the efforts of schools, students, and teachers in promoting CPR awareness. This year along with the Special Recognition Award, which is given to schools that have trained  every student in their school in CPR,  the Irish Heart Foundation is delighted to introduce the new CPR Heroes Award that recognises individual students and teachers who go the extra mile in promoting CPR awareness.

The Special Recognition and CPR Heroes award are presented as part of the Irish Heart Foundation’s CPR 4 Schools programme. Currently 82 per cent of post-primary schools in Ireland are trained in CPR which includes 2231 teachers in 596 post primary schools around giving the programme a reach of over 370,000 post primary school students.

Through the CPR 4 Schools Programme the Irish Heart Foundation is creating a generation of life savers by training post-primary school students around the country to perform CPR, use an AED in cardiac emergencies and respond when someone is choking.

“ We are overwhelmed by the work schools are doing across the country to promote CPR and train the next generation of lifesavers."

Laura Hickey, Children and Young People Programme Manager , The Irish Heart Foundation

Laura Hickey, Children and Young People Programme Manager at the Irish Heart Foundation, said, “We are overwhelmed by the work schools are doing across the country to promote CPR and train the next generation of lifesavers. They are stepping outside of their schools into their communities going further than we ever expected. We are hopeful that even more schools will apply for the awards this year, and we are happy to be able to acknowledge the hard work that our students, teachers and schools are putting into the CPR 4 Schools programme.

CPR is a lifesaving skill that everyone can learn, and this programme is available to every post primary school in Ireland, equipping young people with the skills and confidence to perform CPR. We would like to train more post-primary schools and teachers and are encouraging teachers to attend our free training courses.”

Barbara O’Keeffe, Teacher at Kilkenny College said, “I am delighted that Kilkenny College took part in CPR 4 schools. All students and staff have had the opportunity to receive CPR training and the feedback from all has been really positive. For the whole school community there was a great sense of togetherness as we all participated in the same programme, learning such an important life skill.

I would encourage all schools to get involved in this programme, it has been a very worthwhile and rewarding experience for us.’
