Cleaner air for healthier hearts

Irish Heart Foundation campaigning for cleaner air for healthier hearts.

The Irish Heart Foundation, with support from the Government of Ireland, has this week launched its range of printable and digital posters to help everyone join our campaign for cleaner air for healthier hearts. These assets have been designed for the public, state bodies, and businesses to raise awareness of the health impact of air pollution and the steps they can take to protect their health and the health of their families.

The national heart and stroke charity is encouraging the public to download these assets and share them in their community to help raise awareness about the importance of clean air for good heart health.

In Ireland, every year, around 1,700 people die due to air pollution. Most of these are due to stroke or heart failure. The biggest source of this toxic air pollution comes from burning solid fuels such as wood, coal, and turf in our fireplaces and stoves.

A recent survey from the Irish Heart Foundation revealed that almost 1 in 3 people do not think burning wood, coal, or peat indoors is damaging to the health of those living in the home. Up to 40% of emissions from open fires remain in the room and can seriously harm your health and those around you.

A significant number of households in Ireland have no choice but to burn wood or coal in their fireplaces and stoves to heat their home, and they should continue doing so. Families should never go cold this winter. Energy poverty is a real threat to public health.

For those households and businesses that do not need to light their fireplace or stove for domestic heating, the Irish Heart Foundation is asking them not to do so. Similarly, for households in urban or rural Ireland, if you do not need to light a fireplace or stove to warm your home, then don’t.

Lighting an open fire or stove causes harmful emissions that linger in the air, harming your health and the health of your family, neighbours, and community. Before you light that fire, ask yourself the burning question, is it really necessary?
