Go Red for this year’s Vhi Women’s Mini Marathon

By Gillian Hogan 3rd Aug 2021

The Vhi Women’s Mini Marathon is going virtual again for 2021 and you can now register to join team #Irishheart for this years event.

The annual 10K charity road race will be happening on the weekend of the 19th of September. Usually taking place in Dublin, it is the largest Women’s event of its kind in the world. However, its virtual platform once again this year means you can do it anywhere you want, allowing even more people than usual to get involved.

The Irish Heart Foundation will be coaching participants along their journey and you can register to join the team here. Participants are then aided in starting their fundraising journey, receive advice, tips, a training plan, an Irish Heart Foundation branded headband. They also have the option to opt in to receive a VHI Women’s Mini Marathon branded t-shirt and medal.

You can run, walk or jog the distance dependant on where you are in your own personal fitness journey and if you prefer can even split it into two 5km runs. Regardless of how you choose to complete the race, we are asking women all over the country to Go Red and raise funds for our life-saving work. Every step you take will help provide support to those who have survived stroke or are living with heart disease and allow them to take the necessary steps to aid their recovery.

The beauty of this event is you can actually spread it over two days so if you’re never going to run 10k that’s okay. The fact that it is virtual again is also great because you can have a lovely run wherever you’re from.

Anne Riordan, Public Engagement Manager at the Irish Heart Foundation.

The Irish Heart Foundation previously held their own 5K ‘Love Run’ in February, so this is the perfect opportunity for all our ‘champions’ to challenge themselves further.

Participants can also join the Irish Heart Foundation’s Facebook group, aptly titled ‘Irish Heart Foundation Champions’. The group offers a vibrant sense of community, filling the hole in the heart left by many virtual challenges in the current climate. Group participants range from complete fitness beginners to seasoned pros, majority of whom have been touched by stroke or heart disease in their lives in one way or another. Regardless of fitness level, the group is about coming together to push one another to their full potential while raising funds for a cause close to all our hearts.

‘It gives people the opportunity to feel they are a part of something. Even though we are all apart, we’re part of something. Being able to post a photo into the group at the end when you’re missing the glory of the finish line and feeling the support from everyone is amazing’ says Anne.

This year, Vhi have also launched the brand-new Official Event App. The app will allow participants to track your race, log your time and even following the official route of the VHI Women’s Mini Marathon in Dublin City.

Sign up to support the Irish Heart Foundation in this years VHI Women’s Mini Marathon taking place the weekend of the 19th of September, here.
